Dental care and hygiene is extremely important! I’m always stressing the importance of taking care of her teeth to my 7 year old daughter. Today I want to talk to you guys about the importance of finding a good orthodontist early in your child’s life. I know you might be thinking… Why orthodontics? Orthodontists are uniquely qualified dental specialists who correct improperly aligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontists receive an additional 2 to 3 years of specialized education (beyond dental school) to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth! The top reason for seeing an orthodontist is to treat malocclusion, or a “bad bite.”
As a parent I feel like it’s better to take care of dental problems sooner than later. Orthodontists treat kids for many problems as mentioned above, including having problems with jaw growth and tooth development. These tooth and jaw problems may be caused by many reasons like tooth decay, losing baby teeth too soon, accidents, or habits like thumb-sucking. Problems can also be genetic or inherited, meaning that they run in a person’s family.
There’s no set age for your child to visit the orthodontist. However, many orthodontists say a kid should see a orthodontist before age 7 so any problems can be spotted early. That doesn’t mean a child will get treatment right away. But at least the orthodontist will know which problems exist and can choose the best time to start treatment. Early orthodontics may mean less treatment later.
Orthodontic care can save your child from future pain and discomfort. Not to mention, it can also save you from future expense! And who doesn’t love to save?! So keep encouraging your kids to take care of their pearly whites. Trust me, they’ll thank you for those awesome smiles when they are older!
